In October 2004, the 40th Anniversary of Kelston was celebrated. Numerous 'Kelstonians' from across the years popped in throughout the day. In the evening a cross-section of both former and present members of the club shared their experiences and memories.
Back in 1964, some residents from Netherhall House began to spend the weekends in a newly-acquired house facing Wandsworth Common in South London, to extend the activities of NEA to schoolboys, as Netherhall House had up to then catered only for university students. It was not long before there were permanent residents at Kelston and a thriving club and study centre whose success down the years has benefited more than 1600 young people, very many of whom have been regular members right through their secondary school years.
In keeping with NEA's objectives, Kelston aims to provide opportunities for personal development through varied activities within a friendly environment and to offer personal advice and facilities to help them improve their study habits and enrich their moral and spiritual life.
Kelston Club has members aged 10 to 14 who meet on Saturdays: Juniors (up to 12) in the morning and the Seniors in the afternoon. Over-15s can join Kelston Study Centre which operates on Sundays and is open all week for private study.
The website has details of all activities including:
- Study weekends, preparation for examinations, language practice including trips overseas, and cultural visits into central London.
- Film-making, computing, graphic art, photography, music-recording, animation modelling, creative writing, video and magazine production.
- Guest speakers on topics relevant to young people: study techniques, communication skills, careers, and current issues.
- A mixture of sports and excursions: canoeing, rock climbing, golf, football, mountain biking; visits to places of cultural interest and challenging outdoor pursuits.
- Visits to the elderly and infirm in the locality, to encourage young people to give generously of their time in serving the less fortunate.
- Membership has grown over the years to the point that it is now necessary to expand the facilities, and especially to provide separate study and activity areas for the Club and the Study Centre, in order to allow for simultaneous use of the premises by a greater number of young people.
To this end, a 40th Anniversary Development Project has been set up to raise the necessary funds to take over the property adjacent to Kelston. Acquired by the Association in 1984, this property was let out as flats to meet mortgage repayments. Now, twenty years later, some of the flats have been taken over for use by Kelston but a £1m fundraising effort is required before Kelston can expand to occupy the whole building.
